Understanding Benefits in Medical Device Sales: What to Expect

When looking into a career in Medical Device Sales, a big question pops up: What kind of benefits will I get? It's a great question, as benefits can vary widely from one company to another. Let's break down what you might encounter, based on general industry trends and my own experiences.

Typical Benefits in Medical Device Sales

The range of benefits you can expect often depends on whether you're hired as a W2 employee (where you're on the company's payroll) or as a 1099 contracted rep (essentially, working as an independent contractor). Here’s a general overview:

Car and Gas Allowances

  • Company Car: Some firms might provide you with a company car, which has been my personal experience.
  • Car Stipend: Others might offer a monthly stipend, like $500, to cover your car expenses.
  • Gas Coverage: Companies may cover all your gas expenses or offer a mileage stipend, such as 54 cents per mile. In some cases, gas might not be covered.

Travel Expenses

  • Covered by Company: Many companies will cover your travel costs outright.
  • Reimbursement: Some might require you to front the costs for travel, promising reimbursement later.
  • Travel Stipend: A few might offer a stipend to help manage your travel expenses.

Insurance and 401k Match

  • Health Insurance: Most medical device companies offer comprehensive health insurance plans.
  • 401k Match: Many provide a retirement plan match, like my company's 6% match, which is a nice perk.

Final Thoughts

While the majority of medical device companies boast impressive benefits, it's crucial to ask about and understand the specifics during your interview process. Each company's offering can differ, and knowing what to expect can help you make informed decisions about potential job offers.

Understanding the benefits package is an important part of considering any job, especially in a field as dynamic as medical device sales. Armed with this knowledge, you're better prepared to navigate your career path.
