A lot of people in medical device sales keep their heads down and never look around. They stay in one division, listen to the same people, and assume that what they’re making is all that’s possible.
I just talked to someone at a top orthopedic company who’s been in the industry for five years and asked me if a $200,000 OTE role was even real. That tells me everything. Of course it’s possible. It’s just not common.
The industry has changed fast. In the last 24 months alone, recruiting and interviews have completely changed because of AI. But most people are still thinking the same old way.
Normal Thinking Keeps People Stuck
Everyone will tell you what’s “normal.”
Normal is breaking in at lower pay and slowly working your way up.

He told me he didn’t even know this kind of opportunity existed. That’s the real problem. People don’t know what’s possible until they see it happen.
What Actually Matters
Breaking into medical device sales doesn’t come down to luck.
It comes down to:
- Betting on yourself
- Being coachable
- Working hard
- Having emotional intelligence
- Showing you can do the job before you get the job
People say it’s impossible, but the only people who say that are the ones who don’t know how it’s done.
Look Outside Your Lane
Most reps think everyone in the hospital is their competition, so they don’t talk to anyone. The best reps do the opposite. They talk to other reps, learn about other divisions, and find better opportunities.
If you stay in one lane and never ask questions, you’ll never see what else is out there.
