Do You Need A College Degree For Medical Device Sales?

One of the most common questions people ask is:

"Do I need a 4-year degree to break into medical device sales?"

The short answer?

No. But it depends on the company.

There are definitely medical device companies that require a bachelor's degree. Many of the larger corporations, such as Medtronic, Stryker, Johnson & Johnson, and other major players, often list a 4-year degree as a requirement for their sales positions.

But here's what many people don't realize:

Not every company in medical device sales requires a degree.

And we've seen plenty of people break into the industry without one.

Experience Can Sometimes Beat a Degree

One thing we've noticed over and over again is that certain companies will value experience just as much as education.

For example, we've helped people from clinical backgrounds such as nursing and radiologic technology break into medical device sales because of the knowledge and experience they already brought to the table.

These individuals understood patient care, hospital environments, and physician interactions.

That experience mattered.

In some cases, it mattered more than having a traditional 4-year degree.

Distributorships Can Be a Great Pathway

Another area where we've seen success is with distributorships.

Distributorships are often smaller medical device companies that work directly with hospitals, physicians, and surgery centers.

Because they're smaller organizations, they typically have fewer layers of management and fewer corporate hiring requirements.

We've helped surgical techs and other healthcare professionals without degrees break into medical device sales through distributorship opportunities.

For many people, this can be an excellent first step into the industry.

Startups Often Focus More on Skills

Medical device startups can also be a great option.

Unlike larger corporations, startups are often looking for people who can provide value immediately and help grow the business.

That means they may be more flexible when it comes to degree requirements.

We've seen individuals without a bachelor's degree successfully break into medical device sales through startup and MedTech companies because they had the right skills, work ethic, and ability to contribute.

The Industry Is Starting to Change

One trend we're excited about is seeing more companies move away from strict degree requirements.

Instead of saying a candidate must have a bachelor's degree, some companies are now allowing relevant work experience to substitute for formal education.

We recently helped someone with strong sales experience but no degree land a position with a top medical device company because the company valued their track record and work experience.

That's something we expect to continue seeing more of in the future.

There Are Exceptions to Every Rule

One example is ConMed.

ConMed is a larger medical device company that does not require a 4-year degree for certain sales positions.

That's important because it shows that even some well-known corporate organizations are becoming more flexible with their hiring requirements.

We've also seen situations where companies made exceptions because a candidate had strong clinical experience, surgeon relationships, or a proven ability to bring business into the organization.

However, it's important to understand that not every company will make those exceptions.

Some organizations maintain strict hiring requirements, and we've seen candidates make it all the way to the final stages of the interview process only for HR to stop the hire because they didn't have a bachelor's degree.

Final Thoughts

Not having a 4-year degree doesn't mean you can't break into medical device sales. While some companies still require one, there are plenty of opportunities through distributorships, startups, and companies that value experience over education. Focus on building skills, gaining relevant experience, and creating relationships. There may be a different path to get there, but the opportunity is absolutely there for those willing to put in the work.
