5 Mistakes That Block Medical Device Sales Success

If you want to break into medical device sales—or actually succeed once you're in—there’s one thing that matters more than anything else: your mindset.

Seriously. We’ve talked with thousands of people, from brand-new reps to CEOs and regional managers. And the difference between those who crush it and those who just scrape by?

It’s not their resume.
It’s not their connection.
It’s their mindset.

Here’s what that looks like—and what you need to focus on if you're ready to go all-in.

1. Negative Self Talk

Let’s start with the voice in your head.

The truth is, most people say way worse things to themselves than they ever would to a friend.
Stuff like:

  • “I probably won’t hear back.”

  • “Why would they hire me?”

  • “I’m not good enough.”

That kind of self-talk kills your confidence before you even try.

And look—we all do it. But the key is becoming aware of it and starting to change the story. You’ve got to become your own biggest cheerleader. You’ve got to push yourself and believe there’s always another shot, another connection, another opportunity.

2. Haters

This one's real. When you're out there grinding, you're going to hear from people who don’t believe in you—or worse, try to tear you down.

Maybe someone tells you you're not cut out for this.
Maybe a manager ghosts you or makes you feel like a joke.
Maybe someone leaves you a nasty message just because you’re hustling.

But guess what?
That says more about them than it does about you.

People who are winning want others to win.
The real ones will encourage you. The great mentors will want you to do even better than them.

So ignore the noise. Focus on the people who lift you up.

3. Planting Timelines

So many people come into this process saying, “I’ll break in within 3 weeks.” Cool!
But then I ask, “How many interviews do you have?” and they say, “None.”

Here’s the issue: They set this fake deadline, and when they don’t hit it, they crash mentally.
They lose steam, feel like they’re failing, and sometimes stop altogether—when they might’ve been just a couple weeks away from success.

The truth? Our average member breaks in within 8.5 weeks. Some take longer. Some less.

So don’t set unrealistic timelines. Stay focused and keep moving forward.

4. The Actual Reality

So often, we create fake stories in our heads.

A hiring manager doesn’t respond, and suddenly your brain goes:
“They must hate me.”
“They think I’m not qualified.”
“They’ll never hire someone like me.”

But reality check—maybe they’re just on vacation. Or busy in surgery. Or just didn’t see your message.

You’ve got to step back and ask:
What’s real?
What’s actually happening right now?
Don't make up negative stories that stop your progress.

5. Accept the HARD

Here’s the truth: This whole thing is hard.

Breaking in is hard.
Performing once you’re in? Even harder.
That’s why not everyone does it.

But instead of running from the hard, accept it.
Embrace it.
Let it drive you.

Most people quit when things get tough. If you can just stick it out—just keep showing up—you’ll pass 90% of the crowd.

And don’t focus on how hard it is every day. That only makes it worse. Just accept it’s hard, and go do the work anyway.

Be Happy. Healthy. Wealthy.

We just had someone go from making $80K to $130K. Amazing, right?

But even with the new income, she felt stuck—because she hadn’t accepted that she deserved to enjoy life now.

Here’s the deal:
You have to decide to be happy.
You have to choose to be healthy.
You have to own the fact that you can be wealthy.

And yeah, when you level up your life, your circle may change. Your goals change. Your standards change. That’s okay. That’s growth.

Final Thoughts

The #1 indicator of success in medical device sales? Mindset.

It’s not about luck or timing.
It’s about how you think, how you speak to yourself, and how you bounce back.

If you work on what’s happening between your ears, everything else follows.

Keep your mind sharp, your energy focused, and don’t stop until you’re in.
